BURNITURE

I lead on graphic design for Burniture, a cross-disciplinary collective that up-cycles discarded furniture, helping to avoid precious materials going into landfill.

01. BRAND IDENTITY, OCTOBER 2022

Burniture’s mission stems from the belief that design and production should model ecological systems, where resources are used effectively, circulating in healthy metabolisms instead of being wasted after one short life.

I designed a brand identity that reflects this connection to nature, through visualising the unique forms we find in our natural environment.

02.  BUSINESS CARDS

We print on 100% up-cycled and homemade card, made by our in-house paper maker Freya. She blends up collected waste paper and dying flowers to produce beautifully textured paper. To ensure the cards are safely biodegradable we use a rubber stamp to print the design onto the card, avoiding the need for digital printers with toxic inks.

03. WALLPAPER, OCTOBER 2023

While exhibiting at New Designers 2023 Burniture was awarded with the Decorex Sustainability Award. This landed us a display booth at Decorex in October 2023. For the show we decided to launch two new products and Burniture Wallpaper was one of them.

My mission was to expand on the signature bark pattern, celebrating a return to nature by providing a break from much of the synthetic pieces that dominated the fair.

Sustainably printed, for more information see Burniture website here.

04. PROMOTIONAL POSTER ZINE

The other product we launched at Decorex was The Rohan Chair, Burniture’s first batch product. These chairs are a tongue in cheek take on flat-pack furniture and can be easily dismantled and reconstructed. However, unlike other flat-pack products this one is actually sustainably, made from reclaimed wooden floorboards after we partnered with a flooring company in London.

I designed a promotional zine to accompany this launch and I wanted the binding to mimic the intelligent structure and versatile handling of the chair. So taking an A3 sheet, I folded it into eight pages to display text and images, then when unfolding the zine a poster is found covering the inside A3 spread. I printed the zine on homemade Lokta Paper, from local vendors in Shepherd’s Bush.

05. EXHIBITION  DISPLAY, MARCH 2023

In March 2023, Burniture held an exhibition to celebrate its first collection of repurposed furniture in Garden Walk, Shoreditch.

We curated a narrative over two floors that manifested Burniture’s motivation into action. The ground floor was the ‘problem floor’, where we exposed the environmental implications of the fast furniture industry. This supplied the context for the upstairs ‘solution floor’, where the audience walked into a room filled with creatively repurposed waste and optimism.

After writing my dissertation about design’s opportunity to move us away from a throw-away society, I produced this display for the ‘problem floor’. Using a multimedia mind-map to visualise how the economy fuels our society’s waste problem. Also producing signage featuring our typeface blowtorched into wood then sanded down for a clean finish.

06. WEBSITE DESIGN, OCTOBER 2022 - CURRENT

I designed and built Burniture’s new website on Cargo, using CSS and HTML to organise elements and achieve an enhanced user experience.

07. INSTAGRAM CURATION + DESIGN, OCTOBER 2022 - APRIL 2023

I launched Burniture’s Instagram in October 2022, curating a narrative with the help of our founder Georgia to grow Burniture’s audience through its sustainable message. I designed the posts working with the beautiful photos and videos produced our talented in-house photographers and videographers.

08. TOTE BAG ZINE, DECEMBER 2022

I screen-printed Burniture tote bags onto 100% recycled cotton, these were then distributed at a sustainable pop-up in Spitalfields, London. This meant that Burniture’s message began walking around Shoreditch, gaining traction to our socials and spreading our ethos.

09. BRAND MAGAZINE, DECEMBER 2022

I designed and wrote for ‘The Slow Burn’, Burniture’s first brand magazine. It's intentions were to expand on Burniture’s community through its environmental and social messages.

10. PRINTED ZINE, OCTOBER 2022

I designed Burniture zines to assemble the collective in a visual and tactile way. This lent credibility and visibility to collaborators and clients in the time before Burniture’s website was published.

I printed on hand made and 100% recycled Lokta Paper, with it’s rough texture animating Burniture’s natural aesthetics. I then hand bound each zine with organic cotton thread.

11. POSTCARDS, OCTOBER 2022

I printed on Lokta seeded card, hand made from 100% recycled paper. The organic ingredients ensured a soft yet sturdy texture which held printing beautifully.
